  • Specialised programmes offered by both the institutes have few takers and steps are being taken to reduce the vacancies.
IIT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad Record Maximum Vacancies Among IITs

IIT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad have recorded the maximum number of vacant seats despite the seven rounds of counselling conducted on the basis of JEE Advanced scores. 32 seats remain vacant at IIT-BHU, whereas, ISM Dhanbad failed to fill up 23 of its seats.

Seats remain vacant in B.Tech in Pharmaceutical Engineering offered by IIT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad’s Environmental Engineering and Mining Machinery, Fuel & Mineral programme. Despite the fact that IIT-BHU has shown improvement in bringing down the number of seats from 38 in 2016 to 32 in 2017, the institute still has the maximum number of vacant seats among all IITs.

Why Seats Remain Vacant at IIT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad?

  • IIT-BHU is the only institute amongst IITs that offer 4-year undergraduate and 5-year dual degree courses in Pharmaceutical Engineering
  • There are few takers for these programmes as most of the students seek programmes that do not require an understanding of Biology-related subjects.
  • Students enrolled in these programmes opt for other engineering courses in further counselling rounds and the seats remain vacant.
  • ISM Dhanbad is facing the same problems with its specialised courses. There are few takers for programmes like Mineral Machinery, Fuel and Mining.

Steps Taken to Fill Vacant Seats:

  • IIT-BHU has restructured its dual degree and UG courses in Pharmaceutical Engineering and has made them more research oriented to include science, humanities and management skills.
  • The courses will also include Biology and Biochemistry subjects in the curriculum of the first-year in order to help students deal with advanced biology in the Pharmaceutical Engineering course.
  • ISM Dhanbad is also planning to review the curriculum and courses in order to reduce the number of vacancies.
  • The institute is also planning to cut down the number of seats in the specialised programmes from the next academic session.

Although the specialised courses offered by these record 100% placement, seats in these programmes often remain vacant as students don’t have a thorough understanding of the programmes. They often switch to other courses for better career prospects.

Students of the Pharmaceutical Engineering programme at IIT-BHU are recruited by companies like Sun Pharmaceuticals, Jubilant Generics, Lupin Research Park, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, etc. Interaction with students regarding these courses can help in promoting these programmes and reduce the number of seats.
