The higher learning institutes keen on taking part in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF Rankings 2018) can now register on the official website for NIRF. The registration process for next year's rankings has been initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. As per the notification, October 6, 2017, is the deadline for institutes to complete the registration process. Furthermore, MHRD has also sent the pre-registration link to the heads of all the institutes of higher learning across the country.

MHRD introduced the NIRF ranking framework for the higher learning institutes in the year 2015. The first edition of the NIRF rankings was released in 2016 followed by the second edition in 2017. During the release of NIRF Rankings 2017, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar encouraged institutes to actively take part in the rankings which rates an institute in the overall aspects as well as degree-wise.

The absence of various prominent institutes in the rankings of the second edition raised a lot of concerns, especially among the students. It was reported that many institutes failed to submit the necessary data to register for the rankings within the stipulated period.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked as the best institute and best university in the country. IIM Ahmedabad was ranked as best management institute while IIT Madras was awarded the tag of the best engineering institute.
