In a recent announcement, the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay (IIT-B) revealed that the premier engineering institute of the country is all set to increase the number of seats for both undergraduate as well as postgraduate programmes. This is indeed a good news for students looking forward to enrolling for the B.Tech and M.Tech programmes offered in various specialisations at IIT Bombay.
It is estimated that the Indian Institutes of Technology or IITs are planning to add about 550 seats combined in all the courses that it offers. So, from the next academic year, the total number of seats that will be available at the institutes will exceed 11,000.

As revealed, majorly the new seats will be added to the newer institutes or the IITs that are comparatively newer. However, IIT-B will increase its intake as well to cater to the demands of the field of engineering and produce good quality of engineers for the country.
The Director of IIT-B, Devang Khakkar said that the institute will be introducing a new undergraduate programme in which about 30 seats will be available. Moreover, some seats will also be added to the existing postgraduate programmes from the coming academic year.
It is interesting to note that the Joint Admission Board, also known as JAB had given the approval on the proposal of increasing the intake at the engineering institutes back in 2016 itself. However, the older IITs claimed that their infrastructure was not so advanced that it could accommodate more students on its campuses. They were of the opinion that engineering is not only limited to providing students with classrooms, but it also requires adequate arrangements in the hostels as well as laboratories where the students spend most of their time while pursuing engineering.
On the other hand, IIT in the capital city of the country is planning to introduce a new design programme and therefore add more seats.

At present, there are 22 IITs in the country with IIT Goa, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu and IIT Dharwad that started its operations in 2016 and are unlikely to increase their student intake. Apart from the that, the other government engineering institute is Indian School of Mines or ISM Dhanbad.
Another challenge that is faced by the engineering institutes is that a lot of seats go vacant during the counselling rounds that are conducted for seat allotment after the JEE Advanced results are announced. Hence, they are not sure if the plan of increasing the intake will work in their favour.
