Odisha government has approved that the state will have two more universities which the government has converted to affiliating universities. Rajendra University (Balagir) and Kalahandi University Bhawanipatna will be the affiliating universities for some of the constituent colleges in Odisha. These two universities got their unitary university status in March 2019.
Arun Kumar Sahoo, Higher Education Minister, Odisha said that this decision was taken by the Odisha government as there are many colleges affiliated under the Sambalpur University and it is difficult for students to obtain mark sheets and degrees from the university. To streamline the process and make it easier for the students' government decided to take this decision.
The government has already assigned 65 colleges to Rajendra University and Kalahandi University has been assigned 50 colleges of Nuapada and Kalahandi districts. These colleges are presently affiliated to Sambalpur University.
There are two types of universities in India i.e. affiliating and central. Central universities have a single campus and offer post-graduate as well as undergraduate courses. However, India has many affiliating universities which are basically the universities like Calcutta University or Delhi University which have one central campus but many colleges are affiliated to it.
