Vice President to Visit Patna University Library on its 100th Anniversary

The Vice President of India, Mr Venkaiah Naidu will not only visit the library of Patna University but will also revive the library journal and launch a souvenir commemorating the centenary.

Patna University Library Centenary Celebrations

The University of Patna authorities is gearing up to celebrate the centenary event of the Library. The bookshelves are being dusted off and the university Wheeler Senate House is maintaining the old books for the celebrations. The university does not want to leave any stone unturned for the gala celebrations of the event. The library which is turning 100 on the 4th of August, 2019 and it will welcome the Vice President of India, Mr Venkaiah Naidu on the historic day.

To mark the occasion, the vice president will release a special library journal on thee Patna University library as the centenary souvenir. The vice-chancellor of the University, Mr Rash Bihari Prasad Singh expressed that they are honoured to have the vice president of India, Mr Venkaiah Naidu in the occasion. The main celebration will be held at the historic Wheeler Senate House neighbouring the Patna University Library. Mr Singh added that the vice president will visit the library first which holds some priceless books and manuscripts in the central building. Then he will visit the senate-house to attend the main function.

The director of Patna University Library, Mr Rabindra Kumar stated that Mr Venkaiah Naidu will release a special postal cover at the main event held in the library’s centenary, he will reveal the PU Journal and centenary souvenir, which has been revived from the current year. The PU journal had been lying latent for decades.

The Patna University is the seventh oldest university in India, the university was set up on 1st October 1917, however, its library will achieve 100 years in the month of September 2019.

In 2017, the university saw grand celebrations for the centenary of the university. The event was graced by the presence of Prime Minister of India Mr Narendra Modi. The celebrations for the university library will be expectedly no less fascinating than that.

The Patna University Library has begun its tenure in a double-storied building of colonial-era with imposing columns in its facade. The library is located nearby the iconic Senate House of the Patna University on the campus.

According to the state’s district gazetteer for Patna which was published in 1970, the PU library had four main segregated collections, General Library section; Bayley Memorial Banaili Economic section; Collection section and Hindi Collection section of Rai Bahadur Shiva Shankar Sahay. The Bayley collection was identified after the first Lieutenant Governor of Orissa and Bihar, Sir Charles Stuart Bayley. He served the new province in his tenure from 1912 to 1915, after its creation from partitioning it from Bengal in 1912.

According to the gazetteer, this rich repository, now called the Patna University Central Library, in 1966 had 1,21,641 books. Both the library and the over 90-years-old Senate House have hosted a number of important events in history so far. Once in 1940, Patna University proved to be instrumental in hosting of the 4th All-India Library Conference which was attended by 83 delegates from different parts of the country, which happens to be the highest recorded number till that period in the history of the prestigious conference, attended the gala event, which was started to be held from April 13th to 15th that year, was initially organised by the Indian Library Association known as ILA, established in 1933 at the first all-India library conference at Belvedere which is now known as National Library in Calcutta.
