Hindu College in talks with HRD Ministry for More Autonomy

Hindu College is in talks with Union education ministry regarding autonomy status and whether they would face a fund cut if they applied for the same. The DU college has also asked HRD ministry if there is a provision under the Delhi University Act to grant autonomous status. St Stephen’s College had also applied for autonomous status last year but their application has not received clearance from Delhi University yet.

However, the application led to opposition from certain students and teachers of the college. According to them, the college should not apply for autonomy so that it is more closely linked with the University of Delhi.

As per the University Grants Commission guidelines for Autonomous Colleges (2017), colleges that are granted autonomy have the following powers:

  • Start their own courses and redesign the curriculum
  • Hire New Faculty
  • Freedom to Announce Results
  • Issue mark sheets, migration, and other certificates
  • Conduct examinations and launch self-financed initiatives
  • Prescribe admission rules prevalent to current policies

However, the students will be awarded the degree by the university itself with the college name on the degree.

One of the UGC officials said that various colleges who wish to apply for the autonomy are approaching the government with their queries especially regarding grants and fund cuts. The application of St. Stephen’s is pending for clearance and after not getting receiving the same from Delhi University it was assumed that they do not have any reservation over their application. To grant the autonomy an inspection will be carried by the UGC expert team.
