IIIT Hyderabad Director, PJ Naryanan suggested that IITs can use JEE Main rank instead of JEE Advanced this year. This will reduce the delay in the admission process at least by 5-6 weeks.

JEE Main Instead of JEE Advanced

JEE Mainand JEE Advancedare the gateways for admission in premier institutes such as IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. While JEE Advanced score is mandatory for admission in IITs, JEE Main rank is considered for admission in IIITs, NITs and GFTIs. This year, JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams have been postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak, and there is no clarity on the exact dates for conducting these exams. According to the recent statement of the HRD Ministry, JEE Main is expected to be conducted in June. This will delay the admission process for at least two months.

Usually, the admission process for IITs begins in June. As the admission season for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other engineering institutes may witness a delay by at least 5-6 weeks, IIIT Hyderabad Director, PJ Narayanan has come up with a suggestion to the conducting body of JEE Advanced. He suggested that IITs can use JEE Main rank instead of JEE Advanced this year due to the ongoing situation in the country. The move will not only reduce the stress on students with regard to the exam preparation but also it would enable the premier institutes to take up admission process 5-6 weeks early so that the admission process is not delayed.

Usually, JoSAA conducts the admission process for IITs, IIITs, NITs and GFTIs only after the announcement of JEE Advanced results. Once the JEE Main results are out, JEE Advanced is conducted within 15 days, and the declaration of results may take another 15 days. In all, once the JEE Main results are out; it takes at least 4-5 weeks to start the admission process for IITs.

According to IIIT Hyderabad Director, if IITs scrap JEE Advanced this year for B.Tech admission, it would reduce the delay in the admission process, and other engineering institutes (non-IITs) need not wait for the IITs to initiate the admission procedure.

Adding further, Mr. PJ Narayanan indicated that most of the board exams in various states have been delayed, and these exams may be conducted only in May, which will further delay the engineering entrance exams. Therefore, JEE Main rank can be used for admission in IITs to minimize the delay in the admission schedule, he expressed.

50% of seats in UG engineering courses at IIT Hyderabad are filled on the basis of JEE Main rank, while the rest are filled on the basis of state-level/ institutional-level procedures. Therefore, IIIT Hyderabad had to rely on JoSAA for filling 50% of seats, and a delay in the counselling process will further delay the academic schedule.
