CAT 2014 was held for 2 separate days, i.e. on November 16, 2014 and November 22, 2014. IIM Indore was responsible for conducting the Common Admission Test in 99 cities and 354 CAT exam centres. Out of a total of 1,96,988 registered candidates, 1,67,829 appeared for the exam. The paper was similar for all four test slots and the overall difficulty level of CAT 2014 was recorded as Easy.

The exam pattern of CAT 2014 witnessed a drastic change, however, the CAT syllabus remained the same. Earlier, the admission test was conducted for a period of 22 days, but in 2014, it was held only on two days. Also, the exam duration of CAT 2014 was increased from 140 minutes to 170 minutes and the total number of questions per section went up from 30 to 50.

CAT 2014 Question Paper Highlights

  • The exam duration was increased by 30 minutes and the total number of questions scaled up from 60 to 100.

  • Unline CAT 2013, there were no sectional boundaries in CAT 2014. Students could switch over sections and devote less or more time as per their liking.

  • The syllabus of CAT was similar to last year and there were only two sections in the exam. Candidates had to attempt questions based on Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation.

  • The exam followed a negative marking scheme where 1 mark was deducted for every incorrect answer. 

  • Candidates were awarded 3 marks for every correct attempt.

Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning

  • Out of 4 reading passages, only 1 was a little tough.

  • Verbal Ability saw 18 questions with no questions on English usage and Vocabulary.

  • Logical Reasoning had 16 questions with a moderate difficulty level.

  • Logical reasoning and verbal ability questions were a bit lengthy.

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation

  • DI had a total of 16 questions while Quantitative Ability had 34 questions.

  • Most of the questions were doable and this section was comparatively easy than last year.

  • Quantitative Ability had a good mix of Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and pure Maths.

  • Data Interpretation had a fair mix of logical sets and calculations.

  • A few questions in Data Interpretation were a bit tricky.

  • Basic knowledge of Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation lay down a strong foundation for solving these questions easily.

  • A lot of practice is mandatory to understand the nature and type of questions that might come up in the exam.

  • Solving numerous sample questions regularly also helps in discovering shortcuts and learning tricks to save time in the exam.
