Some of the prestigious Indian Universities such as the University of Hyderabad (UOH) and JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) made it to the latest QS Ranking but no university found a top spot there. Same goes for the Indian Institutes of India (IITs). To overcome the problem and improve national and international rankings of IITs, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has directed the institutes to think of action plans.

In a recent IIT Council meeting, which is considered as the highest decision-making body for all the 23 IITs, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Union HRD Minister raised the rankings issue. Talking about the meeting, a senior HRD Ministry official assured that the issue was thoroughly discussed in the IIT Council meeting. He said that working on research excellence is important and all the IITs must come up with action plans for the improvement of their national, as well as, international rankings.

THE (Times Higher Education) and QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) both are based in London and are considered as two most eminent surveys in the world for higher education. As per the 2019 rankings, many universities slipped down in the QS ranking. Even the most celebrated institutes, IITs and IISc Bangalore (Indian Institute of Science), failed to make it to the top 100 in the list.

This year, two IITs: IIT-B (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay) and IIT-D (Indian Institute of Institute Delhi) and IISc Bangalore secured spots in the top 200 list. Other than that, the IITs that made it to the top 500 in the QS ranking were IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati.
