Apart from the admission race going on the basis of the cutoff lists of Delhi University (DU), students are facing another challenge - and that is to find a suitable accommodation. Every year, lakhs of students apply for different courses offered by Delhi University. However, most of the colleges affiliated to DU do not have the hostel facility and the ones that have hostels offer fewer seats.
There are around 17 DU colleges that offeron-campus and 19 off-campus hostels but are unable to cater to the demand for such a huge number of students applying for it. According to the records, there are around 9,000 hostel rooms only to accommodate the large pool of students. It is then that the students look for accommodations around the campus by renting flats or most of them rely on PGs. Further, there are many who cannot afford a PG and opt to live in cramped houses as well.

Student wings such as NSUI and ABVP have brought this to the notice of the central government. They have raised the issue of hostel rooms several times and have even demanded reserved seats for students who are not from Delhi. Even after securing 95%, the students are not getting hostel rooms and in case they do, it takes months to provide them an accommodation.

Bhupesh, a third-year student in the Physics Department of Kirori Mal College shared his experience on the same issue. He talked about how one of his friends did not get a hostel room and has been living in a congested room in Burari which is five km away from the campus. He added that the hostel is allotted on the basis of merit only.
Apart from this, the university also has a reservation for securing hostel rooms as part of DU admissions.
