CAT 2019 witnessed a surge in the number of applications received. This year, almost 2.44 lakh candidates are competing for CAT 2019.

A drop has been reported in the number of candidates that applied for CAT this year. The total number of candidates in CAT 2020 has dropped down to 2.3 lakhs, a decrease of more than 5 per cent as compared to last year. As a comparison, CAT 2019 had received 2.44 lakh registrations.
The number of applicants in CAT 2020 has been released after the CAT 2020 application process concluded on September 23 5:00 PM. This year's number of registrations is the least that has been seen in the last five years of CAT and is the first time a major drop has occurred in the number of registrations since CAT 2013.
This year, IIM Indore is responsible for conducting CAT. CAT 2020 exam is scheduled for November 29, 2020. IIM Indore is going to conduct the exam in 156 cities across the country. Last year, IIM Kozhikode conducted the exam and 2.44 lakh candidates registered while close to 2.09 lakh candidates applied for the national-level management entrance exam.

The drop has come amidst a massive loss of jobs amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. As per reports, the job situation worsening due to the economic downturn is being speculated to be the reason behind this decrease in the number of CAT 2020 registrations.
