HRD Ministry Urges IIMs to Implement Faculty Quota
The Central Government has indicated that the IIMs may no longer be excused from reserving faculty positions for ST, SC, and OBC candidates

The Human Resources Development Ministry is keen that all the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) meet their constitutional obligation and ensure social equity in the recruitment of teachers, revealed a source from the ministry.

The Central Government has indicated that the IIMs may no longer be excused from reserving faculty positions for ST, SC, and OBC candidates. A senior official from the ministry said that the Constitution of the country provides for reservation and nobody is above the Constitution. Though there is a list of exempted institutions, but the IIMs are not among them.

The quota system for faculty has been a controversial issue ever since the government in 2008 directed all centrally-funded institutions, including IITs, IIMs, and central universities, to set apart teaching positions for OBCs, SCs, and STs.

Developments on quota till now:

  • All IIMs have introduced quota in student admission
  • IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Calcutta have resisted quotas in faculty recruitment
  • Central universities and IITs agreed on the quota
  • Since 2013, the ministry has sent three advisories to the IIMs urging them to implement quota.
