Can KLUEEE 2026 Students Change Their Branch After First Year? Rules, Eligibility and Process
Want to change your branch after 1st year at KL University? It is possible but students need to follow some eligibility rules. Learn in detail about the process of changing to your preferred engineering branch at KLU here.
Many engineering students who have pursued their first year in a branch that may not meet their interests or those of their future careers wonder if they can change their branch (or course of studies) in the following year. For aspirants and students admitted via KLUEEE , it is only natural to ask: Is the change of branch allowed at KL University? If so, what are its conditions, when may it be done, and what is the procedure to be followed?
In a nutshell, yes, KL University may allow a change of branch (from one branch of engineering to another) after the second semester (i.e., after the first year) under certain conditions. Such changes, however, are made to depend upon fulfilling certain conditions of eligibility, merit, availability of seats, and a binding decision. The rules, eligibility, and procedure may be examined more fully.

Key Rules to Change Branch at KL University for 1st Year Students
You can refer to the branch change rules as given here.
When a Change is Allowed
- The university may allow a change of branch after the second semester (i.e., after having completed the first year) in “special cases.”
- The change, if allowed, comes into effect from the third semester onwards.
- After that, no change of branch is allowed.
Merit and Availability of Seats
- The change of branch is strictly based on merit and the availability of seats in the branch to which the student would like to change.
- The top students (according to CGPA after the first two semesters) are given priority.
- The university also has to see that the student is eligible as regards the fulfillment of any other conditions which the new branch may require before admission is granted.
- When a change is once approved, it is final. Once a branch is offered, it cannot be rejected.
Implications for Credit/Coursework
- The university may require “bridge courses” or the equivalent because they are needed for the student to catch up in the new branch.
- Credits earned in the first year may be taken into account, but the student will have to fulfill the curriculum requirements of the new branch.
Non-Applicability to Postgraduate Programs
The policy for change of branch (or discipline) holds good for undergraduate (B.Tech) programs. For the post-graduate courses, no branch change/discipline change is permitted.
One-Time Chance
The policy is explicit that a student can avail of the branch change facility only once under these rules. The students will have their request for a branch change rejected in the subsequent cases.

Eligibility Criteria for Branch Change after 1st Year at KL University
Check out the eligibility criteria for branch change at KLU.
- Coursework for the First Two Semesters
For the branch change facility, the student should have cleared (passed) all the courses of the first two semesters. The marks/grades obtained in the same would be reckoned for the CGPA of the student.
- Merit / CGPA Threshold
The top 1% of the batch (based on CGPA at the end of the second semester) will straightaway be allowed to choose any branch of their choice (subject to availability of seats). For the others (apart from that top 1%), the students having a CGPA at least equal to 8.0 (on the scale currently prevailing) may also apply for the branch change without any guarantee of approval in the case, as the approval is discretionary.
Another consideration that will restrict the branch change as above is the availability of seats in the target branch. Even if the CGPA is favorable, change is not mandatory.
- Admission Eligibility for the New Branch
The student would also have to satisfy the prerequisites for the new branch (i.e., subject backgrounds etc.) as may be prescribed for direct admissions. The student may also be required to take “bridge/remedial” courses as required, so that they are up to the curriculum of the new branch.
- Seat Availability
Reservation of seats on account of categories or quotas may also be there. So parameters of eligibility within those categories apply. (While not documented specifically in public media, this is the standard existing in the branch change policy.) The student will have to accept the branch allotted. Its non-acceptance may lead to loss of chance.
- Timeliness
The request has to be made within the timelines specified, after the second semester (before the commencement of the third semester). Late requests are not entertained.

How to Apply for Branch Change after 1st Year at KL University?
Here is a possible stepwise method (inferred from university regulations and customary practice) that a KLUEEE scholar should follow for their branch change request.
- Official Notification/Schedule
KL University will issue an official notification/circular inviting applications for branch change (after the completion of the second semester). The notification will indicate the time limit for the application and indicate the branches for which there are seats available.
- Evaluation of Merit and Ranking
The academic/admission committee of the university will prepare a rating for the candidates based on the CGPA and the eligibility criteria. Those students who are rated in the first 1% get preference, and those who are rated next with a CGPA ≥ 8.0 (but it is left to discretion). The committee will check whether the student satisfies the eligibility requirements for the branch and whether there are seats available.
- Allotment of New Branch
Successful candidates will be allotted to the new branch (seats permitting). The allotment is final and binding; once allotted, the candidate cannot reject it. The change will take effect from the third semester onwards.
In conclusion, it will be seen that students of KL University have the opportunity to change their engineering branch after the first year if eligible with the conditions required as to academic quality and the procedure to be followed. This change is allowed after the second semester and depends primarily on the performance of the student in his/her academic results, more particularly his/her CGPA, combined with the available seats in the desired branch.
