Achieving a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) is one of the significant milestones for many students in India, including those whose parents are police and military officers and may have sacrificed to secure the country. The Indian government, state government, and learning institutions offer special admission concessions, reservations and scholarships, given the recognition of their service and the trouble their families experience. Such provisions allow the children and widows of the police and armed forces staff to receive quality technical education at reasonable prices.

B.Tech Admission 2026 for Wards of Armed Forces and Police Personnel: Seat Reservations

Reservation of seats in engineering colleges is one of the most important supports that could be offered to police and military wards. The engineering institutions of central and state governments normally set aside about 2-5% of total seats for wards and widows of defence personnel, which includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), State Police and other paramilitary groups. Some states, such as Punjab, Delhi and Haryana, clearly incorporate these reservations when conducting engineering counselling. These special seats can also be extended to wards of gallantry award winners and disabled personnel since they make special sacrifices. Check the reservations percentage for the B.Tech admission for Police/ Military personnel wards in the table below:

B.Tech Scholarships and Financial Assistance for Wards Armed Forces and Police Personnel

Other scholarship programs are limited to children and widows of police and military who are financed during their technical schooling. The Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) of the wards and widows of CAPFs, Assam Rifles and state police officers is the flagship scheme. The scheme will offer a monthly stipend amount of INR 3000 up to a maximum of 10 months a year, as long as academic standards are maintained- the entire B.Tech course. The students usually must have a minimum of 60% marks in their higher secondary or diploma exam to be qualified and must be studying in recognised institutions.

Along with the PMSS, supplementary scholarships, tuition fee waivers or concessions are available in a variety of state governments and private universities. The Army Institute of Technology (AIT, Pune) and certain other colleges owned by the Defence Welfare Educational Society provide a full or partial fee waiver to wards of former servicemen or people with gallantry awards. These scholarships assist in softening tuition and maintenance fees, and therefore, engineering education becomes cheaper.

B.Tech Admission Process 2026 for Wards of Armed Forces and Police Personnel

The procedure of admitting police and military wards is more or less the same as the normal B.Tech admissions. The major entrance test is the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) while the secondary pathway is state-level engineering entrance tests. In the counselling process, those candidates who assert that they are under the defence or police wards category should submit valid certificates like service certificate, disability certificate, death or martyrdom certificate or gallantry award letters to the counselling authorities to take benefit of the reserved quota.

Verification-stage and admission-confirmation stage are usually the times when the universities and colleges demand these documents. After verification, the successful candidates are admitted under the reserved category, which makes it easier to acquire a seat in a reputed government and privately owned engineering institution.

These candidates are given a fair opportunity to join engineering careers through reserved seating, special scholarships such as the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme, waiving their fees and favourable government policies. They will further progress to create equity of opportunity and empower the wards of those who serve the nation with pride as awareness increases, and administration becomes better. The provision of unhindered access to such schemes not only satisfies the objectives of social justice but also is a process of enhancing the Indian technical labour pool with concentrated, multi-skilled talent.

Is the admission process different for police/military wards?

Admissions are generally through standard entrance exams like JEE Main or state-level tests. What documents are required to claim a reservation or scholarships under police/military categories?

Applicants need to submit valid service certificates, gallantry award proofs, disability certificates, death/martyrdom certificates, and official dependent or service ID cards issued by competent authorities such as the Kendriya Sainik Board or the Ministry of Home Affairs.

What scholarships are available to police and military wards pursuing B.Tech?

The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) offers up to INR 3,000 per month for wards and widows of CAPF, Assam Rifles, and police personnel, subject to eligibility criteria like a minimum 60 per cent marks in qualifying exams. Additional fee waivers and scholarships are provided by some universities and state governments.

Are there special reservations for wards of police and military personnel in B.Tech admissions?
