Physics plays a very important role in deciding your overall JEE Main percentile and rank. Many students either score very high in Physics or struggle badly, which makes this subject a clear rank-decider. Understanding the JEE Main Physics marks vs percentile prediction 2026 can help you set realistic targets and avoid unnecessary panic after the exam.

Based on previous year data, expected difficulty level, and subject-wise marks vs percentile trends forJEE Mains 2026, we have prepared an estimated Physics marks vs percentile range. These are not official cutoffs, but they will help you understand JEE Mains subject-wise marks vs percentile, where Physics stands, and what score is considered safe for top NITs and IIITs.

How is JEE Main Physics Percentile Calculated?

Many students think their raw marks directly decide their percentile, but that is not true. JEE Main Physics percentile is calculated separately for each session and shift, using NTA’s normalisation process. This means your Physics marks are not compared with students from all shifts, but only with candidates who appeared in the same session and shift.

The Physics percentile for JEE Mains, also known as PIP (Physics Individual Percentile), is calculated using the formula below:

Physics Percentile (PIP) = 100 × (Number of candidates with Physics score ≤ your Physics score) / (Total number of candidates in that session)

In simple words, if 95% of candidates in your shift scored equal to or less than you in Physics, then your Physics percentile becomes 95.0000000. Because JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts with different question papers, difficulty levels may vary slightly. Normalisation ensures that you are not at a disadvantage if your Physics paper was tougher, and a fair comparison is maintained across all sessions. This is why two students with different Physics marks can sometimes get almost the same percentile.

Your overall JEE Main percentile is calculated from total marks (Physics + Chemistry + Maths), but subject-wise percentiles still matter. If two students get the same overall percentile, NTA uses:

  • Higher Mathematics percentile
  • Higher Physics percentile
  • Higher Chemistry percentile
  • Fewer incorrect answers

So, it is clear that a high Physics percentile can give you an edge over others, especially near cutoff ranges.

How many JEE Main Physics marks are “Good” for Top NITs and IIITs?

A very common doubt among students is what counts as a good Physics score. While there is no fixed number, based on admission trends, 80+ marks out of 100 in Physics is generally considered strong for top colleges. However, the safe score depends on the branch and institute you are targeting.
