Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) , which is considered as one of the largest state-run universities in Haryana failed to record an impressive placement record. Only 13% engineering graduates who passed in the year 2015 and 2016 were able to secure employment. The existing placement scenario of MDU clearly indicates the large scale of unemployment, particularly for the engineering graduates.

The CAG Audit report of MDU that was tabled in Haryana Assembly indicates that the varsity’s performance in different aspects cannot be termed satisfactory. The quality of education in MDU is said to be deteriorating over the years. As a result, the graduate and postgraduate students of MDU lack requisite skills necessary for the employment.

As per the CAG report, only 13% (61) students out of 479 at MDU’s Institute of Engineering & Technology were able to secure jobs in 2016. On the other hand, only 76 engineering students (13%) out of 579 got placed in 2015.

The CAG report further pointed that the varsity had planned to launch an interactive web portal for career counselling and placement in 2013. However, the plan was only on paper and it never took off till date.

The CAG report also mentioned that the pass percentage of students is not up to the mark and the number of dropouts is also increasing constantly. For instance, the pass percentage of various departments of varsity in the year 2013 was 80%. The pass percentage started to decline after 2013 and the overall percentage was 61% in 2016. The dropout rate of students has also increased to 17% in 2016.

The CAG audit observed that the varsity was not showing any interest towards the declining pass percentage and increase in dropouts. The varsity has been failing to achieve its main objective, i.e., to promote and develop interdisciplinary higher education.

It was also highlighted that the professors at MDU devote less time to teaching than the norms and teaching hours prescribed by UGC. The actual workload of teachers at MDU is much shorter than the teaching hours prescribed by UGC.
