The 4th convocation organized at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) campus concluded where students and teachers shared their views.
Most of the Gold medallists of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) opined that they prefer research work over engineering and stressed on the need to develop the research culture in the country.
- Degrees and gold medals were presented to the students a the convocation.
- On the occasion, the Dsc (Honoris Causa) degree was conferred upon Prof Ajay Kumar Sood of the department of physics at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. HRD minister and chief guest Smriti Irani could not attend the function but she sent a congratulatory message to the students.
- IISER director VK Singh, IISER Board of Governors chairman Vipin Sondhi, and others were present at the convocation ceremony.
The majority of gold medallists have either got placements in some firm for research work or are planning to move abroad. But they were ready to return to serve the country after completing their doctoral.
Sachin Shain a Recipient of President's Gold Medal going to pursue doctoral studies in theoretical physics at the University of Massachusetts in the US said "I am fortunate to have got an institute like IISER. It has changed my life. I learned here that research is the demand of the hour and one should think on this aspect.”
Sanjana Agarwal from Haridwar said “I had joined IISER to study physics but during the first year of my stay on the campus, I was fascinated by mathematics and decided to major in that field. I am now planning to attend Indiana University in the US for her Ph.D. in mathematics.”
- In all, six students won gold medals while a total of 25 Ph.D. degrees were given away. Out of these, 13 graduates were from chemistry, nine from biological sciences and three from physics. Besides, 68 Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (BS-MS) degrees were awarded, with 22 graduates from biological sciences, 27 from chemistry, 15 from physics and four from mathematics.
