The inaugural ceremony of Bisra Munda Tribal University at Rajpipla town (Narmada district) took place on October 14, 2017. Mr. Shabdasharan Tadvi (Gujarat Minister of State for Tribal Welfare) inaugurated the varsity that will benefit over 90 lakh tribals in the state to get access to higher education. The varsity is situated at Rajpipla town, a highly dominated tribal region, which is 90 km away from Vadodara.

Currently, the varsity will function through a temporary campus at the premises of Adarsh Nivasi Shala until the construction of a permanent campus at Jitnagar village (located on the outskirts of Rajpipla town). The permanent campus will be constructed on 25-acres of land that will have all the modern amenities and facilities.

The State Assembly of Gujarat had passed a Bill in May 2016 to set up Bisra Munda Tribal University. Mr. Tadvi, who also represents the Rajpipla constituency, revealed that the varsity would offer Certificate, Diploma, Post Graduate and Under Graduate courses covering the subjects of Science, Commerce, Arts, Sanskrit, Herbal Medicine, Traditional Art and Skill. The varsity would benefit a large section of tribal students across Gujarat.

The varsity has been named after Bisra Munda, who was a great Indian tribal freedom fighter from Munda tribal community. His call against the British ‘Let the Kingdom of Queen be Ended and Our Kingdom be Established’ is remembered today in the areas of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal. He was the only tribal leader to have the honour of having his portrait hanging in the Central Hall of Indian Parliament.
