AIPMT 2015: SC Directed States to Revert 875 Seats

In a recent move SC has directed states to revert back around 875 seats of government medical colleges to respective states. This accounts for 15% of the total 3,429 seats.

While passing the order on October 1, SC put a stay on admissions against these seats and extend the admissions for beyond the deadline of September 30. They also asked the states to fill the seats on the basis of AIPMT merit list. Out of 858 seats last year, around 682 reverts came from MBBS and 176 from BDS.

"Although the Hon'ble Supreme Court has directed the states to fill the AIPMT seats reverted to them through the AIPMT merit list and also extended the last date for admissions to October 7 ,but the advantage of this may not be fully passed on to the AIPMT qualified students. Most of these states are holding the counselling in the only three working days, i.e. October 5 to 7 where the student who is interested needs to apply and be physically present for the counselling. Eventually, the student practically will only be able to attend counselling of one state,” said an academician and PMT Trainer

"It would have been much better and more justified if the MCC would have held a centralized counselling after fresh choice filling for the reverted seats as it had done earlier. Then many students who had a good rank in AIPMT and wanted to move nearer home or were not allotted any seat through the AIPMT earlier counselling would have benefited from the Supreme Court decision. Instead of the states who have already filled the reverted AIPMT seats through the state merit list while the case was ongoing in the Supreme Court. There is no clarity on the issue of such seats and many affected students stand at a disadvantage.” He added further.
