Aviation Regulator Requests UGC to Upgrade Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Courses
If the UGC gives the nod for upgrading the courses, the students will be awarded graduate degree instead of diploma or a certificate.
The Aviation Regulation are in talks with University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the upgradation of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) Courses. There are 49 AME institutes in India which are yet to upgrade the courses as per international norms and standards. These institutes offer AMC courses recognised by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

A senior DGCA official said that there is a need to upgrade the AME courses as per international standards which largely deal with aeronautical engineering and related subjects.
Currently, the duration of AME courses is four years which include a mandatory practical training for one year. If the UGC gives the nod for upgrading the courses, the students will be awarded graduate degree instead of diploma or a certificate.

The officials of AMC are however worried about the delay in finalising the curriculum for courses. An executive official of AME Institute, Bangalore mentioned that the change would delay the admission process for the academic year 2017-18. A change that has to be done must be carried out earliest as the faculty who teach in AMEs must update themselves to the new curriculum.
The AMEs were granted permission from DGCA to admit students for the current academic year, and there are no changes in the duration of the courses.
