Dev Samaj College convocation concludes conferring degrees to 485 students

Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, Chandigarh conferred degrees to 485 students at its 29th annual convocation.

Degrees were conferred upon students from various streams, including PGDCA, MA (Economics), BCom, BCA, BBA, BSc (IT) and BA. In addition, 15 students were awarded the Golden Certificate of Merit and 33 students were given the Certificate of Merit for excellence in academics.

Around 16 students were awarded scholarships under the aegis of Vimal Bhargava Charitable Trust for achieving first and second positions in Panjab University in annual examinations.

Japneet Kaur, an alumna of the college who scaled Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, was awarded a cash prize of Rs 11,000 by the college management.

The convocation began with an academic procession followed by the lighting of the lamp and the college player. Nirmal Singh Dhillon, secretary, Dev Samaj, was the chief guest on the occasion while Dr. Agnese Dhillon, Principal, Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36, Chandigarh, and Gurmeet Singh Jaura, member, BC Commission, Punjab, were the guests of honour.

While delivering the convocation address, Dev Samaj secretary Nirmal Singh highlighted the need for educating girls and inculcating confidence in them. He urged the graduates to be the brand ambassadors of Dev Samaj culture, which was to have a sense of gratitude and thankfulness towards their parents, teachers, society and nature. Showering his blessings on young graduates, he wished them success in life.

The history of this college can be traced back to 1901, when Bhagwan Dev Atma, the most worshipful founder of Dev Samaj, established Girls High School, Ferozepur City. These were the times when the education of girls was very much despised. This premier and popular institution served as an incentive for the establishment of many other reputed institutions in Northern India. In 1957 Dev Samaj Girls High School and Dev Samaj, Junior Model School was established. Consequently, Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh was started in 1981. During this short period of its existence, this college has carved a distinctive place among the local colleges and can be compared well with other colleges affiliated to Panjab University.Year of provisional affiliation is July 1981.
