Gujrarat Rules Out Mass Promotion for Colleges, Universities
Gujarat state government has ruled out the mass promotion of colleges and university students. The state govt is taking numerous parameters and their consequences into consideration before making a final call.
Gujarat state government gave permission to promote school students without conducting exams due to the lockdown in the country to contain COVID-19 spread, it has ruled out the same option for colleges and universities.
The mass promotion of college and university students has been ruled out by the Gujarat state government. It is contemplating a method to evaluate the students. The evaluation will take into account the student's performance in previous semesters.
Anju Sharma, Principal Secretary Education informed that the state government has totally ruled out mass promotion and it was also legally challenged in the Supreme Court when Gujarat University raised issues against the mass promotion of the university students.

Recently, student organizations like Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had demanded mass promotion for students of colleges and universities. According to the sources, there are chances of reviving the carry-forward policy for universities and colleges which was in function two years ago.
Under the Carry Forward Policy, the student was promoted in all previous semesters even if the exams were not cleared till the semester. In this case, a student is required to clear the pending exams in the last semester or else he/she would be detained.
The options are being explored for the first year and the second year UG students except for the final year UG and PG students. The decision for the same is yet to be announced.

Anju Sharma further informed that they are taking numerous parameters and their consequences into consideration before making a final call. The department does not want to rush and will take into consideration all the stakeholders. So we do not want any anxiety among students and parents amidst the prevailing condition. Also, many private universities will be conducting exams in online mode.
