High Court seeks Response regarding delay in Establishing DU Campus in Najafgarh
- Senior Citizens Associations of Najafgarh filed a PIL regarding the negligence of authorities in setting up DU campus at Najafgarh.
- The land in Najafgarh was allocated to DU on lease in 1989 in order to build another campus for students.
The High Court of Delhi has questioned the University of Delhi, Central Government and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for not setting up DU campus in Najafgarh (Southwest Delhi) despite the acquisition of land for it 28 years ago. Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Hari Shankar expressed concern over the reluctance of authorities in setting DU campus at the designated location.
The land was allocated in the year 1989 on a lease for 99 years. The authorities associated with DDA and DU has not taken any measures to construct a campus at the allocated land.
The court issued a notice to DDA in which the court directed the authority to file a status report on the matter. The next hearing on this matter will take place on January 22, 2018, and the Government of Delhi has to file a response on the issue before the stipulated date.

Senior Citizens Associations of Najafgarh filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) claiming that the students who wish to pursue higher studies in the area do not have access to quality education. Many students have no other option except to travel long distances to south and north campuses of Delhi University.

The PIL also requested the court to constitute a committee to look into establishment process of campuses and colleges in Roshanpura village, located in Najafgarh, where the land was allocated to Delhi University. Even though the land was allocated 28 years ago, the authorities failed to materialise the construction work. So far, the authorities have built a boundary wall, stated by the senior citizen's committee.
