IIT Kharagpur's Centre of Excellence on Advanced Manufacturing Technology Launched
- IIT Kharagpur gets it own Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies which will focus on improving the quality of Indian capital goods to make them globally competitive.
- Centre to be functional by the end of this financial year.
The Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology has been newly established at the IIT Kharagpur campus by the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI). The Centre is expected to completely functional by the end of the financial year.
The primary focus of IIT Kharagpur's Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology will be to concentrate on improving the quality of Indian capital goods and make them globally competitive for 4.0 industries.
They will also focus on improving the manufacturing by introducing new innovations and technology. The four important areas that will be the center of focus are manufacturing, automation, materials and digital interventions. The key concentration of this activity will be to make the Indian Capital Merchandise/ Goods segment internationally competitive by using techniques such as 3D printing, robotic and micro-friction among others.

As per the sources, Rs. 65.19 crore has been funded by the PPP for the establishment of the Center. Out of the sum allotted, Rs. 47.62 crores have been contributed by the department itself. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed in this regard in the esteemed presence of IIT Kharagpur officials and Mr. Babul Supriyo, the Union Minister of State and Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

Further, the Centre aims to bridge the gap between the leading manufacturing firms of the country and to provide SMEs the ability and technology to meet global requirements. The main focus as of now is towards the industry 4.0. As the next generation is all about new technological advancements, the age of artificial intellect, robotics, production through digital intervention and automation can bring about huge changes and trends as desired.
Since the entire project has been taken up in the form of a consortium model, it will be backed and supported by some of the most renowned and acknowledged industrial houses of India such as Tata Sons, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tata Steel and Ampere Vehicles.
