IIT Kharagpur Collaborates with Tata Medical Centre for Cancer Research

The MHRD has recently taken up the NDLI (National Digital Library Database) initiative to build a library on image and digital content for research. The IIT KGP and Tata Medical Centre will contribute to it with Cancer Image Archives.

For cancer research aid in India, the Tata Medical Centre has teamed up with the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kharagpur . The collaboration will be working for setting up a Comprehensive Digital Archive of Cancer Imaging (CHAVI) for cancer research. Both the institutes prepare to set up a Digital Imagery Library proposed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

For the pilot project to develop an image data bank for cancer patients, through the NDLI (National Digital Library Initiative) of the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), IIT Kharagpur has joined hands with the cancer care centre. A statement released by IIT KGP has said that this initiative will be the first in India to incorporate the utilisation of A rtificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning for medical research in respective of image banking procedure and methods.

On a workshop held in IIT KGP on Friday, the Principal Investigator of NDLI, Mr Partha Pratim Chakraborty hailed the CHAVI initiative to be the first of its kind in India and its future utilisation in developing a very accessible image banking system for research causes. The Tata Medical Centre, keeping in mind their immense expertise in cancer treatment in India, has been chosen for being the partner to build up image library for cancer research projects.

Dr Sanjoy Chatterjee, the project head, on behalf of Tata Medical Cente, Kolkata has said that India needs more affordable research solutions for cancer treatment.
