IIT Kharagpur to Roll Out Joint Research Projects with University of Manchester

The University of Manchester and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur are planning to roll out academic programmes and joint research project. An official statement issued by IIT Kharagpur stated that both the institutes held a series of discussions in technical, scientific and other areas. Both the premier institutes will also undertake joint research and technology projects as well as international academic programmes.

A team of administrators and eight professors of the University of Manchester, led by Professor Stephen Flint (Associate Vice President of UoM), visited IIT Kharagpur over the weekend during their first trip to India this year. The two premier educational institutes that signed a MoU last summer to work towards developing a course. The course will be structured for working professionals in the domain of Health Informatics. Opportunities for international Ph.D. and Master’s courses have been discussed during the visit.

Dean of Alumni Affairs and International Relations at IIT Kharagpur, Professor Siddhartha Mukhopadhyay, revealed that the extended exchanges between the University of Manchester and IIT Kharagpur would not only play a crucial role in developing research programmes with global impact but also it would lead to world-class training programmes in and out of varsities.

Currently, both the institutes are planning to consider joint research projects in Smart Textiles, Earth-Environment-Water-Sciences, Advanced Materials and Biomedical Informatics. So far, none of the institutes or universities across the country have taken up joint research projects in the above-mentioned areas.

These research activities can be supported through research funding such as Global Challenges Research Fund and Newton Bhabha Fund.
