After the rustication of eight Dalit students from Ambedkar university, Lucknow, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that, in order to not repeat an incident like that of Rohith Vemula, an inquiry to look into the matter has been constituted.

On 8th September, eight Dalit students were expelled by the authority of the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) for attacking a teacher and then vandalizing his vehicle.

A group of the students met the HRD Minister in Delhi to make him aware of the situation. After the meeting was over, the student delegates said that the minister has assured them that he would launch an inquiry to look into the matter and ensure that the expelled students get justice.

In an incident that took place in September 2016, the teacher whom the students had attacked lodged a FIR against six Dalit students. But after a few days, the students also lodged a counter FIR reportedly alleging that they were attacked by the teacher and his gang of supporters. They also claimed that he made 'casteist' remarks. Dalit students across different educational institutions came out in support of those expelled BBAU students demanding justice.

In the last meeting with the Vice Chancellors of all the Central Universities last month, the HRD minister had made his stand clear that he did not want incidents like that of Rohith Vemula to happen again in campuses. No student should face injustices.

Javadekar made it clear that HRD ministry will ask all colleges and universities to institute a grievance redressal cell that could look into such incidents.
