Maharashtra: Admission to Private Medical and Dental Colleges Stalled due to Fee Structure Row

The admission to private medical and dental colleges in Maharashtra has been stayed temporarily by the state government due to fee structure row. All the private medical and dental colleges in Maharashtra offer around 1,500 seats. Private colleges have demanded the state government to rework on the fee structure. Until the government takes the decision on the fee structure of private medical and dental colleges, the admissions will not begin. Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra published the first selection list on July 28, 2017. However, the admissions process will take place only for government medical and dental colleges. The admission process for around 35 private medical and dental colleges has been stayed.

The private medical and dental colleges association of Maharashtra wrote to DMER to hike the fees for medical and dental courses.

According to DMER, the candidates whose name is featured in the first selection list have to report to respective colleges by July 31. Now, the reporting date is likely to be delayed as the state government has stalled the admission process for private medical and dental colleges. Earlier, Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA) had prescribed a revised fee structure for the academic session 2017-18. Many college managements were not satisfied with the revised fee structure. The college managements demanded the state government to come up with a reasonable fee structure.

Director of DMER revealed that the state government is in talks with the managements of private medical and dental colleges. Merit list will be issued once the issue is sorted out.
