MBBS Courses in India to Get New Curriculum Soon

If everything materialises as per plan, MBBS courses in India is likely to undergo major changes with the introduction of a new curriculum which is on cards from the next year. According to the proposed new curriculum, the mandatory practical training will move to the first year of 4 ½ years medical course/ MBBS.

The existing curriculum for MBBS course is turning old and outdated. Therefore, there is a need for competency-based curriculum. The aim to implement new curriculum is to produce more competitive and skilled doctors.

The proposed new curriculum for MBBS course, namely, ‘Competency Based Integrated Curriculum for UG Medical Education’ will mostly have practical based training approach. The major outcome of the new MBBS curriculum will be that the graduates will get more exposure that is practical apart from skilled-based competencies and problem-based learning techniques. The new curriculum will focus on integrated learning of three aspects namely: -

• Community-based medicine
• Hospital-based medicine
• Classroom training

The new MBBS curriculum will also consider some of the major guidelines framed by World Federation for Medical Education and MCI (Medical Council of India).

The new MBBS curriculum will make students take ‘Must Know Test’ conducted by respective medical colleges at the end of each semester. These tests will mostly have questions on medico-legal issues, sexual harassment and behavioural issues. Apart from these, attitude ethics and communication will also have a place in these tests.

With a motive to enable teachers to understand the new concepts of MBBS curriculum, MCI is organising a national-level faculty development programme. So far, close to 40,000 teachers participated in the training programme.
