Uttarakhand Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat has declared recently that the state would soon launch MBBS courses in Hindi in order to help Hindi-medium students to compete better with the English-medium educated medical students. This move has been greatly criticized by doctors and the National Medical Commission alike.

The President of the Delhi Medical Council, Dr. Arun Kumar Gupta has given a public statement to the media outlets that since almost all medical books are published outside India, it is very difficult to teach medical courses in Hindi. Even if translations are done, it will be time consuming and ineffective in the long run. Moreover, the terminology is completely in English which makes it impossible to change the vocabulary of the MBBS books. It is also a pertinent fact to note that reputable research papers and journals are also published in English.

AIIMS Rishikesh Professor Dr. Amit Gupta has also expressed severe concern regarding this unprecedented step. He says that when they were all students, the classes were conducted in English. Therefore, training professors in medical colleges in Hindi terminology will take a lot of time and exorbitant effort which is not viable for a course like MBBS.

Moreover, MBBS graduates would not likely be able to get work in only the Hindi-speaking belt of India. There are also several graduates who aim to go outside India and pursue their further studies and research there. With Hindi as the mode of teaching and learning, prospects would be narrowed down to a great degree.

“There are no standard medical books in the Hindi language. More importantly, the surgical and pharmacy sectors are completely based on English. It is a bitter truth that English is like carbonic anhydrase to medical education. One cannot learn medicine without the English language”, said Dr. Mohit Singh, resident doctor at Rajshree Medical Research Center, Bareilly.
