The Supreme Court on Thursday, 25th May 2017, refused to grant an urgent hearing on a plea that requested cancellation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) examination which was conducted on May 7, 2017, for aspirants seeking admissions in BDS and MBBS courses for this academic session.

The petition was filed by an NGO, Sankalp Charitable Trust. They alleged that NEET examination was not conducted uniformly across the country. For instance, there was a vast difference in the question papers for Tamil and English language.

The plea was raised in the apex court just a day after the Madras High Court granted an interim stay on the publication of the NEET 2017's results. Thus the apex court ruled out the matter as it was already under consideration at the Madras High Court and further intervention was not required until the Madras High Court heard the matter. The bench has asked the petitioner to raise the matter next week if needed.

The petition filed by nine students accuses the Council of distributing different sets of question papers despite the fact that a uniform syllabus was announced in each part of the country. The petitioner appealed before a vacation bench of Justices Navin Sinha and L Nageswara Rao claiming that NEET 2017 exam question papers were leaked in Bihar and also circulated in states like West Bengal and Rajasthan.

The petitioners highlighted that, in Tamil Nadu, different question papers were given to students who opted for Tamil and English papers. It stated that the Tamil question paper was comparatively easier than the English paper.

Over 11 lakh candidates had appeared for the NEET examination this year at more than 1,900 centres across India.
