The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) will come up with a common ranking list of top 100 educational institutions. All Indian universities and institutions will be competing together including theIITs,IIMsand othercentral universitiesandstate universitiessuch asDelhi University (DU),Banaras Hindu University (BHU), etc.

The list is expected to be published in the first week of April by NIRF. The HRD Ministry established NIRF in 2016. Separate category rank lists for universities, engineering colleges and business schools were published by NIRF last year.

Although this year, a common list will be published for all colleges and universities, additional ranks will also be released in the larger sub-categories similar to the lists of previous years. The colleges will be ranked on the basis of various academic parameters.

NIRF Parameters 2018:

Parameters basis which colleges will be ranked are as follows:

  • Teaching and learning resources
  • Graduation outcome
  • Outreach and inclusivism
  • Research and professional practice
  • Perception

With a common ranking list for colleges, various colleges questioned the methodology of ranking the colleges as salaries offered at institutes like IIMs and IITs will be way better than those offered to students pursuing courses like humanities. A common rating system will, therefore, be a bane for colleges other than IITs and IIMs.

However, an official working closely with this initiative said that the packages and job offers are not the sole criteria for ranking colleges. The number of students applying for higher education will also be one of the major deciding factors, added the official.

Students who have not benefited from their graduation in any way and are sitting idle will account for a negative factor for the respective college. This will impact the score of the college as over 2.5 lakh people will be asked to rate colleges under the perspective parameter.

IIT Madraswas placed on top of the NIRF list in the engineering colleges category, whereas,IIM Ahmedabadtopped the business schools category.
