Region-Wise List of State Universities in India

State universities in India are also known as public universities which are run by state governments. Unlike central universities in India, state universities are established through a legislative assembly act by the respective state assemblies. All state universities that are run by state governments come under the ambit of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

As per the latest list of UGC, there are 367 state universities in India. Among these, University of Mumbai, University of Calcutta and University of Madras are regarded as some of the oldest universities in India with an esteemed value and prestige attached to it. The Governor of the respective state is the official ‘Visitor’ of the state universities in India.
