SC Cancels NLAT 2020: NLSIU Admissions to be Based on CLAT
The Supreme Court (SC) has given judgement on the NLAT 2020 entrance. It stated that NLAT 2020 will be cancelled and NLSIU will conduct admissions through CLAT 2020, as done in the previous years.
The Supreme Court (SC) has released its judgement onNLAT 2020. Thislaw entrance examwhich was conduted for the first time ever this year stands cancelled now. TheNational Law School of India University (NLSIU)will conduct its admission process for the academic session 2020-21 throughCLAT 2020, similar to its admissions of the previous years.
Many petitions were filed against NLAT 2020 and there were ongoing cases regarding the exam. The Supreme Court also stated that theresults of CLAT 2020must be announced as soon as possible and the admission process of the exam should be wrapped up by mid-October. Following its selection criteria of the previous years, NLSIU will accept CLAT for shortlisting candidates for it UG and PGprogrammes of law. The court said that the admission process of CLAT must not be hindered by NLU Bangalore in any way.

Students as well as former NLU vice-chancellors and officials had challenged the National Law Admission Test (NLAT) 2020 due to several reasons. After the exam was conducted the petitioners had also filed a rejoinder before the SC, asserting that NLU Bangalore had failed in conducting NLAT 2020 properly and a large number of candidates suffered due to this. It was stated that the examination and its procedure lacked transparency and had several technical glitches.
This stance was supported by the Consortium ofNational Law Universities (NLUs), which had also filed a counter affidavit in the matter through the Vice-Chancellor ofNALSAR, Professor Faizan Mustafa.
NLSIU and its Vice-Chancellor Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy, on the other hand, filed affidavits questioning the maintainability of the plea before the Supreme Court, justifying the conduct of its exam, and urging for the writ petition to be dismissed.
