Section-wise Analysis of CLAT 2018

Legal Aptitude

Out of the 5 sections this year, the Legal Aptitude section was of easy to moderate difficulty level. This section required a good understanding of legal terms as well as good logical skills for getting the correct answer. The principle given for solving the legal reasoning questions were lengthy and confusing. But overall this section was simpler if compared with last year.

An attempt of 40 to 42 at an accuracy of 85 to 90% is a good attempt for scoring in this section.

General Awareness

It was tricky and there were many indirect questions from current affairs, which required in-depth knowledge of both national as well as international news. However, close to 30 to 35% questions in this section were there form static GK.

A decent number of attempts in this section would be 39 to 41.

Verbal Section

Verbal Ability section had many vocabulary-based questions and 1 Reading Comprehension passage comprising of 10 questions.

The RC passage had a mix of both factual as well as inferential questions. The only difficult portion of Verbal Ability section this year was CLOZE test.

There were close to 34 to 35 doable questions in this section.

Quantitative Aptitude

This was the toughest section in this year's CLAT exam. Out of the total of 20 questions, 10 of them were from arithmetic viz.. percentages, profit and loss, and discount, averages, simple and compound interest, time speed and distance, but nevertheless this year there were also questions from other topics of QA like Geometry, mensuration, algebra, simplification, higher maths.

There were questions even from probability and permutation.

There were many speed-breaking questions, which were supposed to be left in the exam.

Logical Reasoning

This year, the level of difficulty of Logical Reasoning questions was of moderate level except 5 to 6 tricky questions.

For NLU Bangalore, the cut-off would be close to 150 plus. For NALSAR Hyderabad, it will go down to 135.

For admission into top 5 National Law Universities, a score of 125 is required.

Section-wise Analysis of CLAT 2017:

Section Difficulty Level Good Attempt New Elements
English Easy 31 to 32 questions in this section will be considered a good attempt. There was a slight variation in the pattern of this section.
General Knowledge Slightly difficult Attempting up to 30 questions in this section will prove to be enough. Questions were asked from events as close as two weeks prior to the exam. Most of the questions asked were from current affairs. No more than 4 questions were asked from static general knowledge
Mathematics Difficult as compared to CLAT 2016. Well-prepared students will be able to score 15 to 16 marks in this section. Many of the questions in this sections had a printing error due to which many of the questions has no option with a correct answer. This confused the students. Maximum questions were asked from arithmetic.
Legal Reasoning Easy A score of 39 to 40 will be considered excellent in this section. A new development in this section was that up to 15 questions were asked from legal maxims.
Logical Reasoning Slightly difficult as compared to previous year. A score up to 40 is easily achievable in this section for a well-prepared student. Most of the questions were basic and matched the standard of elementary mathematics.
