No Takers for 3 Vocational Courses offered by Kerala University: A Report
Kerala University’s three vocational courses received zero admissions this year. The university now plans to review and improve these programmes.
Kerala University Records Zero Admissions in Three Vocational UG Courses: The Kerala University has witnessed a contrary experience this year, with three of its vocational UG courses not having even a single admission. These B.Voc programmes -- Software Development, Tourism & Hospitality and Logistics Management, have been designed to provide students with job-oriented training by providing them with practical knowledge. However, despite their potential, the programmes failed to attract a single student.
According to University officials, lack of awareness is the major cause for poor response. Still, many students and parents are confused about what vocational degrees are, and if they are worth the same academically and professionally as regular undergraduate degrees. This confusion has led students to opt for conventional streams like BA, BCom and BSc, which are generally perceived as safe and more familiar.
Another factor affecting these courses is the limited placement record in vocational streams . As these programs are fairly new, there is little information on professional opportunities and industry demand, and long-term growing opportunities. Parents (who have over 70% influence on their child's decisions) are inclined towards the more traditional academic routes rather than newer ones that seem risky.
In response to zero enrolment in the university, Kerala University has decided to review the curriculum and methodology of teaching of the affected programmes. The review includes syllabus revision, tie-ups with industries for better interaction, internship science and placement, and students for creating awareness regarding the "value of vocational education."
The university officials believe that with better promotion and clearer information on what jobs are available, students will be more willing to take these courses in the future. The university is also assessing whether the courses need to be continued as they are or whether they should be restructured in a way that would better reflect the expectations of the industry and the students.
