With the aim to strengthen the consumer movement in India by spreading awareness regarding the same among the people, it has been suggested by Union Food Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan to introduce a subject of 'consumer studies' in the school and college syllabi.

In a letter to HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, Paswan says that in order to strengthen the consumer movement, onehas to start from teaching the students at the school and the college level regarding the same. This subject will have to enhance the knowledge of the students about their rights and responsibilities as a consumer.

The department of consumer affairs under the leadership of Paswan have already worked on spreading consumer awareness among the youth and has promoted the protection of consumer rights mentioned under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

Paswan urged HRD minister, Prakash Javadekar to take the necessary steps regarding the same and consider his suggestion. Also, the two parties can work on the details of the programme and the necessary modalities together.

Currently, a consumer awareness campaign called 'Jago Grahak Jago' is run by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Along with this, the department is also running a consumer helpline to resolve the grievances faced by consumers.
