Punjab: CAG Raps Govt. for Lack of Regulatory Mechanism for Private Universities
The report stated that lack of a proper mechanism is deteriorating the quality of education.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has rapped the government of Punjab for not maintaining a proper mechanism for private universities. The CAG also found loopholes in the process of establishing seven new private universities. It submitted the report on non-public sector undertakings.
The report of CAG was tabled on the last day of Punjab Vidhan Sabha session. The auditor general of the government noted that a proper mechanism is essential to protect the interests of the student community with an adequate emphasis on quality education.

The CAG report observed the records of February 2015 where the government of Punjab had granted approval to establish eight private universities based on undertakings submitted by promoters to comply with norms.
However, the government did not set up a proper mechanism to monitor the compliance of norms. As a result, none of the private universities had been inspected by the UGC after its initial inspection at the time of establishment. The report stated that lack of a proper mechanism is deteriorating the quality of education.

The CAG also found deficiencies in establishing the seven private universities in violation of Punjab Private University Policy, 2010.
