Research Led by IIT Bhubaneswar: Fly-ash, Red Mud can Replace Cements

According to a research led by Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IITBBS) the mixture of red mud and fly ash can be used as a substitute in construction works without hampering the quality.

According to a research led by Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IITBBS) the mixture of red mud and fly ash can be used as a substitute in construction works without hampering the quality. The information was given by R V Rajakumar, Director of the institute on Monday, August 29.

He also said that this is a very useful implementation of red mud, and waste product released by aluminium plants. Fly ash bricks quite popular and widely used but the institute is taking steps for filing a patent for the technology, added the Director.

Faculty member, Hanumanth Rao was part of the research and informed that 80% fly ash and 20% red mud when combined together form self-compacting concrete that has cement-like strength. The research that led to this discovery started in 2014 and was Nalco-sponsored.

Head of Research and Development, IITBBS, R K Panda said that since the product is formed using industrial waste which is available in abundance, it will help in bringing down the construction cost. It will also help in waste disposal hence contributing the environment.

The research was revealed in a press meet conducted by the director before the fifth annual convocation of IITBBS on Tuesday, August 30.

The director also shed light upon the start-up initiatives taken up by the institute to encourage entrepreneurship. He also talked about the developed dynamic system that records students' feedback regarding various aspects. He talked about the development and progress that IITBBS has done so far.

IIT Bhubaneshwar will confer 110 B.Tech degrees, 55 M.Tech degree, 69 M.Sc degree and 7 doctorates today.
