State Governments Must Give Top Priority to Higher Education, Says UGC Chairman

Chairman of UGC, Ved Prakash said that top class universities in India are very few. Hence there is a need to improve the number of prestigious universities. If there are a high number of top class universities, the quality of education will improve.

Ved Prakash, Chairman of University Grants Commission or UGC, lamented that the state governments are not giving top priority to higher education. Considering higher education as a top priority is the biggest challenge to the state governments. He indicated that the surging diverse population in various universities need treatment of good teachers, facilities, and different resources. He further added that providing facilities and resources might be the reasons which made higher education expensive.

Prakash indicated that the top class universities in India are less. Hence there is a need to improve the number of prestigious universities. If there are a high number of top class universities, the quality of education will improve. Currently, only 24 percent have enrolled in higher education institutes in India, and his target is to reach 39 percent by 2020. Currently, 40% students have enrolled in higher education institutes in China.

He further explained that it is mandatory for the higher educational institutex in India need work for engagement in innovation in research as well as excellence in teaching. He urged that the professors working in various universities must play a significant role in developing e-content for various subjects to give a boost to digital education. There is a need to transform the education system and make students self-reliant.

Mr. Ved Prakash delivered the speech about priority to higher education in the inaugural session of Prakriti film festival at the auditorium of National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research or NITTTR.
