17 States Agree to Central Government’s Directive to Stop Spiking Marks for Class 12

  • 17 states have responded to the call of the HRD Ministry and have agreed to stop inflating marks in Class 12 board exams.
  • From 2018, CBSE and other state boards will not follow the policy of inflating marks.

On October 6, 2017, Secretary of School Education, Mr. Anil Swarup wrote to the heads of all the state education boards to stop the practice of spiking or inflating marks for Class 12 students in board exams. Mr. Anil pointed that spiking of marks is leading to unrealistic cut-off marks for the admission to the University of Delhi. Responding to the call of the central government, a total number of 17 states have agreed to stop inflating marks in Class 12 board exams.

According to sources, the following states have decided to stop inflating marks: -

  • Goa
  • Telangana
  • Nagaland
  • Mizoram
  • Manipur
  • Jharkhand
  • Jammu & Kashmir
  • Assam
  • Rajasthan
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Punjab
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Kerala
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Haryana
  • Gujarat

A senior official associated with education department revealed the 17 states have agreed either to stop inflating marks or willing to reconsider their moderation policy.

The following states are yet to give their response regarding inflating marks in Class 12: -

  • Odisha
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Maharashtra
  • Bihar
  • West Bengal
  • Uttar Pradesh

Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has made the second attempt to stop spiking marks. CBSE decided to stop spiking marks in Class 12 board exams. However, the High Court of Delhi reversed the decision of CBSE on the ground that the move was last minute. From 2018, CBSE and other state boards will not follow the policy of inflating marks.
