Of the totals students enrolled into various engineering courses this year in Madhya Pradesh on the basis of the marks obtained in class 12 th , one-third of them has below 50 percent marks in their final exam.

As per the data available from directorate technical education, 6,675 students took admission in different engineering colleges of the state on the basis of class 12 th marks. Out of them, 2,000 students were admitted into various engineering colleges having below 50 percent marks at class 12 th .

There are two processes of admitting students in engineering courses. These are :

  • Counselling
  • On the basis marks obtained at class 12 th

After taking joint entrance exam (JEE-Mains) students appear in counselling. Preferences are given to the students of counselling.

Other is on the basis of class 12 th marks, which is qualifying marks round. As per the rules, at least 45% is required to take admission in any engineering college through qualifying marks round.

This year nearly 37,000 students took admission into engineering colleges across the state.

Teachers and academicians feel that admission of such a large number of students with below 50 percent marks is a debatable issue.

Though such a good scheme is there to help students who have potential. But the scheme has been virtually taken over by low scoring students, said a teacher.

Parents of the students feel that owing to this reason IITs and NITs students get better placements. Intelligent students are being absorbed by IITs and NITs. Whereas state engineering colleges are getting students with poor quality marks. It has affected the placements of the students after completion of their degrees. Only 20 percent students are getting placement every year after completion of their degrees from the state.
