Before this, the salary of teachers was hiked in 2006. Following the delay in the implementation of salary hike, various teachers’ associations were threatening the government to strike against the delay of seventh pay commission.

The report regarding the salary hike was submitted by the UGC in February 2017. Once implemented, the revised salaries will benefit the teachers and staff working at government funded institutions.

According to reports, there is a separate pay panel and pay structure for centrally-funded technical institutions that will be responsible for suggesting salary hike. However, the government is planning to consider both the proposals together.

Sources also revealed that this salary hike is going to cost Rs. 70,000 crore approximately over a period of three years. This cost will most likely be shared by the Central government and state governments.

Along with the recommendations of salary hike, the system for assessing the performance of teachers has also been revised. Suggestions were also made to link the grants to the number of vacant teaching post and the number of qualified individuals hired for the posts of associate professors and professors.
