Telangana Approval to Decide the Fate of New NCTE Courses

The NCTE has sought the approval of the Telangana government to conduct two new integrated courses to make students eligible for teaching jobs in the state. The government has decided to run it as a pilot project for the first year.

The National Council of Teacher Education or NCTE has sought the nod of the Telangana State government to conduct a couple of 4-year integrated courses for teachers education in the state colleges and universities.

The two new integrated courses are introduced by NCTE to enhance the quality of teaching across the country by providing proper training to the aspiring teachers. NCTE aims to conduct these two teacher education program from the academic year 2020-21.

The integrated course will be open to taking up by the teacher aspirants who are taking admission in any of the Humanities or Science field with the aim of being a teacher in the future. The integrated course will be conducted to provide teachers education to students along with their respective field of studies in the mainstream arts or science courses.

Currently in the state of Telangana, two year B. Ed course is open for students after they have completed their graduation in any stream or specialisation. The new decision by NCTE will bring the course duration down to 4 years than the previous 3+2 year courses.

The National Council of Teachers Education or NCTE has said in a letter given to the state government that they have tried to incorporate the best practices from India and around the world to design the new 4-year course that will indeed help change the perspective of teachers’ education in the state. NCTE informed that the course is designed to make the students eligible to teach in Primary, pre-primary or Secondary level.

Seeking the consent of the state, the NCTE expressed that the states play the most vital role in achieving the goal. The commencement, development, and training of students for future teaching jobs cannot take place without the state’s consent. NCTE will only invite applications for these two courses only after the states have declared their no-objection.

The authorities of Telangana State Council of Higher Education has found the courses to be eligible to run as pilot projects for the first year in state government colleges. It is decided it will be introduced to other colleges only if there are more seekers for the course.
