One of the senior officials of Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE revealed that the board’s proposal to implement three languages which are mandatory for the Class 10 board examination might not be implemented before academic session 2019-20. He further explained that the CBSE had sent a proposal regarding the same to the Ministry of Human Resource and Development in December 2016. According to the proposal, Class 10 students need to study three languages which include English as the main subject.

He indicated that the three language formula is currently applicable to Class 8. Additionally, the students who are going to take Class 10 board exams till 2019-20 need not study three languages. As of now, Class 10 students study only two languages which includes English. The plan of the government is not to disturb the students who are already following the existing scheme.

As per the plan, a student pursuing Class 8 will need to opt for two Indian languages which are listed in Schedule VIII and the third language would be English. All these three languages will be the main subjects in Class 10, and the students can also opt for a non-listed Indian language or foreign language as an additional subject. There is no mandatory rule for students to qualify the additional language.

The re-introduction of Class 10 CBSE examinations received positive feedback from parents, teachers and students. The re-modeled evaluation scheme is also satisfying as the students’ overall performance will be assessed.
