Inspector | PI | In charge of a police station (Station House Officer – SHO). Supervises SIs and ASIs, handles major investigations, maintains law and order, and ensures crime prevention. |
Deputy Superintendent of Police | DSP | First gazetted officer rank (Group-A). Heads sub-divisions of districts, supervises police stations under their jurisdiction, manages serious investigations, VIP security, and law & order in sensitive areas. |
Additional Superintendent of Police | Addl. SP | Assists the SP in district-level administration, supervises law enforcement, coordinates crime control, manages operations, and handles special cases. |
Superintendent of Police | SP | Head of district police. Responsible for crime control, law and order, public safety, administration of police force, and coordination with district magistrate and government. |
Senior Superintendent of Police | SSP | Senior SP rank in larger districts. Has the same role as SP but with a bigger jurisdiction, often handling sensitive/major districts. |
Deputy Inspector General of Police | DIG | Supervises multiple districts within a police range. Coordinates SPs, ensures law & order, oversees major crime investigations, and reports to IG. |
Inspector General of Police | IG | Heads a police zone (comprising multiple ranges). Handles zone-wide law enforcement, disaster management, crime prevention strategy, and supervises DIGs. |
