What counts as “international student” or “foreign national?”

• A person who is not an Indian citizen and holds a valid foreign passport.

• Many universities also treat OCI/PIO holders separately.

• They often get the option of applying under OCI/PIO quotas or under the regular (Indian-national) category.

Law degrees open to international or foreign students

• Integrated 5-year programmes (example BA-LLB, BBA-LLB) offered under the “International / Foreign Nationals / OCI/PIO” quota

• Some universities may also allow foreign nationals to apply for 3-year LLB courses (for graduates) if they meet graduation/eligibility criteria — but availability depends on the university.

Eligibility & admission rules

• Must have a valid foreign passport or OCI/PIO status.

• Should have completed the required qualifying education (example: 10+2, or equivalent school certificate from outside India).

• For foreign-national quota seats, many Indian law schools waive the usual nationwide entrance exam (like AILET / CLAT) for foreign candidates.

• So, admission may depend on prior academic record plus the university’s internal evaluation.

• Once admitted, foreign students will need a valid Indian student visa/residence permit for the duration of the program.

Institutions offering foreign national admissions into prominent Indian law universities

International students have real access to India’s recognised legal education through well-established institutions. Example-

1. National Law University Delhi (NLU-Delhi) – They admit foreign nationals under a special quota.

2. Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai (NLU Mumbai) and other NLUs – You have options to enrol into integrated programmes under supernumerary or foreign-national quota seats.

Legal/ professional considerations and limitations

International students can get admission to LLB programs. However, there may be some constraints in continuing the profession:

• Legal practice in India is regulated by the Bar Council of India (BCI). You will need a valid law degree that is recognised by the BCI, only then will you be able to enrol with a State Bar Council to practise law.

• Additional equivalence or qualifying examinations may be required for foreign-trained law graduates (or foreign students wanting to practice in India after their LLB). It depends on the degree’s recognition.

• As an international applicant, you should check if the specific LLB program (integrated or 3-year) is fully recognised by BCI (especially if your plan is to practice in India).

You now know that admission to an Indian law university does not automatically give you the right to practice law. You have to have recognition and fulfilment of BCI/ State Bar norms.
