How to Change Board From ICSE to CBSE? There are several reasons for changing your board from ICSE to CBSE. One of the major reasons for wanting this change is the difficulty level of ICSE exams as compared to CBSE. ICSE usually focuses on in-depth knowledge with holistic development that makes their overall curriculum a little more difficult than the rest of the educational boards of India. ICSE is an international board; the board exams are presented to match that standard. On the other hand, CBSE has made a lot of new changes in the curriculum, according to which the board exams will get easier starting next year and will be conducted twice in one academic year.

While looking at the comparison between both boards, it is understandable how one would like to change their boards before the board exams. CBSE has set eligibility criteria to be followed by the students to take admission in any class of a CBSE-affiliated school. Read below to learn more about “How to Change Board From ICSE to CBSE?”

How to Change Board From ICSE to CBSE: Eligibility Criteria

There are general eligibility criteria presented by CBSE , which are different for different levels of classes. You can check out the eligibility criteria for some major classes from the pointers given below:

General Eligibility Criteria

  • To take admission, you must be studying in a school affiliated with CBSE or any other recognized Board of Secondary Education in India.
  • You must have passed the qualifying exam and satisfied the requirements of the age limit as determined by your specific state government.
  • You must have a school-leaving certificate signed by the head of the institute and a document supporting your qualification.

Primary Admission Eligibility Criteria

  • Admissions up to class 8th will be given according to the rules and regulations put forward by the state government.
  • Admissions to class 9 will be opened to the students who have successfully passed the class 8 exam from a CBSE affiliated institute or any recognized board like ICSE .

Class 10th Eligibility Criteria

  • To take admission in class 10th, you must have completed a regular course for class 9th from an institute affiliated with CBSE or any other recognized board, including ICSE.
  • You must have obtained the minimum passing marks, that is, 33% in class 9.

Class 11th Eligibility Criteria

  • To take admission in class 11th, you need to obtain 33% in class 10th in a CBSE affiliated school or you need to pass an equivalent examination conducted by any other recognized Board of Secondary Education, including ICSE.

Class 12th Eligibility Criteria

  • It is not allowed to take admission in class 12th directly if you are coming from any other board apart from CBSE.
  • If you are coming from any other board, such as ICSE, then you can take admission in CBSE class 12th only if your family has shifted from one place to another after procuring from the student the marksheet and the Transfer Certificate, duly countersigned by the Educational Authorities of the Board concerned.
  • The Chairman, CBSE, shall have the powers to allow a change of school for better academic performance, medical reasons, etc., to avoid undue hardship to the candidate(s). In the case of all such admissions, the schools would obtain post facto approval of the Board within one month of the admission of the student.

When to Change from ICSE to CBSE: Right Time to Change

The best time to change from ICSE to CBSE depends on the personal circumstances. However, according to the curriculum followed by both CBSE and ICSE, the right time to change your board, if you are studying in ICSE from primary classes, is class 9. Class 9 usually becomes the base for all the curriculum that will be continued for the rest of the years. You will be able to adjust well and understand the exam pattern followed by CBSE. You will have enough time to prepare for Class 10 exams. Also, transitioning from ICSE to CBSE in class 9th will be smooth and less challenging.

How to Change Board From ICSE to CBSE?

Since we have already discussed the eligibility criteria needed to be followed for different classes, now we will focus on the steps that you need to take while transitioning from ICSE to CBSE:

  • Step 1: You need to first decide the class in which you will be taking admission; preferably class 9th will be ideal.
  • Step 2: Research the school in which you will be taking admission; take into consideration various factors, such as location, subjects available, and overall reputation of the school.
  • Step 3: Fill out the application form, go through the interviews and written test, and pay the tuition fees to confirm your admission.
  • Step 4: Obtain your transfer certificate from your old school.
  • Step 5: Submit your original documents to the CBSE school to confirm your admission. Your school will be responsible for registering you for the board exams.

Documents Required to Change Board From ICSE to CBSE

Several certificates and documents will be required while taking admission in a CBSE-affiliated school. Check the list here:

  • Transfer Certificate (TC) from the current ICSE school.
  • Marksheet or Report Card for the previous qualifying exam.
  • Character Certificate (if required by the CBSE school)
  • Birth Certificate (issued by a competent authority)
  • Passport-size Photographs
  • Migration Certificate (For Class 11th Admission)
  • Aadhar Card
  • Parents Transfer Proof (For Class 12th Admission)

A lot of students decide to change their board from ICSE to CBSE to secure more marks in the board exams. This can be termed as a smart decision because CBSE board exams are often regulated like all other competitive exams in India, which gives an upper hand to the students who want to appear for competitive exams like NEET or JEE shortly. It will be very difficult to transfer from ICSE to CBSE in class 12th, so it is better to do the transition much earlier than wait for the last moment.
