After completing a 1-year trade course in ITI Agro Processing, here are some of the most popular job profiles that you can look out for if you wish to pursue a career in the agro processing sector:

Miller, Food Grains

Millers are responsible for processing rice, wheat, pulses, spices and other food grains by operating one or more machines or by supervising their operations being done by other workers. They are also responsible for adjusting and operating machines for removing husk or bran from grains, polishing rice, grinding and crushing grain and spices into smaller pieces or powder, grinding, shifting and screening grains, flour or spices etc.

Millers observe and supervise the milling process for desired results, maintain the flow of milled product by regulating the flow of ingredients in specified proportions and remove obstructions by tapping clogged spouts with mallets and by adjusting gates. They examine products periodically by rubbing a sample between fingers or comparing it with the colour and texture of a standard sample and keep records of materials received and products milled. These millers may even be required to supervise other workers at various stages of processing and may be designated according to the type of grains milled or processed such as Miller Rice, Miller Spices, Miller Dal etc.

Husker, Machine Food Grain

Hullermans operate the husking machine to separate the grain from its outer covering or shell. They are required to start the machine, pour grain into the storage bin attached to the machine and regulate the feeding of grain into the machine by manipulating the lever. They are responsible for examining hulled grain periodically for proper husking and adjusting the machine as per the need.

These Hullermans switch off the machine after completion of the process or whenever the machine does not function properly, remove minor defects and report major defects to the supervisor in charge for rectification. They also clean and oil the machine when not in use. Hullermans may also be required to maintain production reports and direct workers in the storage of graded grain.

Roller Man (Food Grain)

Rollermans operate the rolling machine to crush grain into flour. They are required to adjust rollers according to the fineness of grinding required to start the machine and regulate the flow of grain from the hopper to the grinding rolls. These rollermans observe the crushing process keeping grain moving at a regular rate by tapping clogged spouts with a mallet (a wooden hammer or one made of rubber or rawhide) and by adjusting gates, examining the product periodically by rubbing samples between fingers or by comparing texture with those of the standard sample, detect working defects if any of machine by sight or sound and remove the minor defects and reports major defects to supervisor for rectification. Rollermans clean the roller machine and also roll flour at times.

Flour Mill Operator

Flour Mill Operators operate the grinding machine or the mill used to grind wheat, gram or other grains into flour or animal feed. These flour mill operators set mills by adjusting the roller according to the fineness of grinding desired, feed grains into the feeding bin of the mill by hand, observe the process, keep the grain moving at the regular rate by tapping clogged spouts with a hammer and by adjusting gates, examine crushed product periodically by the feel of fingers and adjusts roller as necessary. They remove the flour collected in a bag or container at the delivery end and clean and oil the machinery. Flour Mill Operators may weigh grain and flour, calculate charges, collect payment of services rendered to customers, and may dress mill stones as well at times.

Oil Crusher Operator

These workers operate a crushing machine for extracting oil from seeds such as cotton seed, castor seed, copra and groundnut. Oil Crusher operators place empty containers below the crusher, start the machine and feed oil seeds into the hopper of the machine, they sprinkle the prescribed quantity of water over oil seeds to moisten them etc. These operators turn the hand wheel to adjust the pressure between rollers and ensure that the oil is being properly extracted, examine the oil cakes visually or by touch to determine that a sufficient quantity of oil has been removed.

They remove the container when filled with oil at the delivery end for further processing and replace it with an empty one, take out oil cakes from the hopper of the crusher and fill the hopper with fresh oil seeds to maintain continuous production, clean and oil machines to keep the workplace clean and tidy. These operators may even specialize in the extraction of oil from particular types of seed, and operate on animal-driven indigenous crushers for extracting oil from seeds, operate filter crushed oil etc.
