UCEED Part B Sketching Tips for Beginners:Mastering creative thinking skills, observation skills, sense of space, ability to draw human-centered design, and technical execution are the keys to ace the UCEED 2026 Part B sketching section. You are not just required to draw a "pretty" picture, but learn the difference between drawing what you think you see or observational drawing and depiction of something that is actually there. If you are a beginner, you must allot at least 30-60 minutes daily to develop expertise in design, that include 10 minutes for lines or shapes, 20 minutes for perspective objects, and the remaining 20 minutes for figures or scenes. Find the tips and techniques to improve hand control and observation skills for scenes or objects here!

UCEED Part B Sketching Tips for Beginners

To be able to create high-scoring sketches in the UCEED Part B Sketching section, learn to draw consistent vanishing points to give it a 3D look; gain deeper understanding of proportions; draw bold and clean lines; and show the details of textures like wood, fabric, or metal. Here are some of the effective tips for improving your design skills if you are a beginner.

Develop the Fundamentals

You should begin with mastering simple shapes that will help you build confidence and self-reliance. If you draw "hairy" or "jagged" lines, it is possible that you are just using your wrist, which is not the correct way of sketching. To improve your skills, you must practise drawing long, continuous straight lines and smooth circles or ellipses by using your shoulder and elbow as well. Building "muscle memory" is crucial to draw clean lines and shapes before you attempt complex figures.

As we all know, every complex object is composed of simpler objects like cubes, cylinders, and spheres. Hence, as a beginner, the first thing you must do is to gain expertise in drawing straight lines, squares, circles, and grids on A4 paper using HB/2B pencils. If you want to understand form and light, learn how you can shade basic forms like cubes or cylinders from different angles and practise them frequently. Do not take more than 10-15 minutes to shade each object and evaluate the proportions by yourself on a daily basis. Note that if you gain the ability to draw a cube in perspective, you are capable of sketching practically anything!

Master Perspective Drawing Techniques

Becoming proficient in one-point, two-point, and three-point views can help you get the hang of perspective drawing for UCEED Part B. If you are attempting 60-minute sketches, you must develop depth, proportion, and scaling skills through daily exercises on daily life in a structured manner. Use freehand pencils on plain paper, focusing on vanishing points and object diminution.

In perspective drawing, first learn how to create depth with a horizon line and vanishing points by converging parallel lines. As you go farther away, objects must appear smaller. Hence, it is suggested that you practice scaling where the front elements must be larger and elements that follow must become narrower. Begin practising one-point (railway tracks) and then move on to advanced figures like two-point (buildings at angle) and three-point (bird's eye). After this, learn to draw basic shapes like cubes or roads leading backwards; sketch everyday objects or fundamental things like bicycles or interiors of a room from eye level amplifying details like wheels or windows. After this, move on to complex scenes like crowded and vibrant markets with shops, vendors, and vehicles diminishing into the distance.

Draw Human Figures

Developing expertise in sketching human figures is of utmost importance since one of the most common subjects in Part B is Humans, typically found interacting with or reacting to a product or environment. The sketches must be proportional and your focus areas should be gesture, basics of anatomy, and interaction of human beings with the environment, and employing the “7.5-heads” rule for realism (which states that the height of an average adult is approximately 7.5 times greater than the height of their own head). Begin with developing the Stick Figure foundation for quick poses by learning to draw a "gesture sketch" where a stick figure is in action, like leaning, sitting, running, reaching. Add volume after that: cylindrical volumes for arms/legs, give clear definitions to curves to show muscles, and add folds to clothing based on the tightness. It is crucial that you add gestures for movement, i.e. portray the person interacting with the surroundings or using something. For example, if the person is sitting on a chair, focus on the contact points of the humans with objects by creating details like the effect of his/ her weight on the seat or how his/her hand is gripping the armrest.

For realistic proportions, employ the 8-head technique which encompasses head, torso (2-3 heads), legs (4 heads). Practice drawing quick sketches of people in action in 30 seconds to improve your speed.

If you are trying to sketch a leaning figure or dancer, draw flowing "C" and "S" curves to portray dynamic action. To make the compression areas (knees bending) more realistic, draw thicker lines, and for extension, draw lighter lines, to exhibit the liveliness of the figure, tilt pelvis or shoulders in an opposite direction. The sides that are turned away must be shaded darker on the torso or limbs. Drawing minimal facial features like almond eyes or nose bridges is often encouraged.

Develop Design Aptitude

Few questions asked in UCEED like "Design a portable chair for a zoo" require designing with purpose or design aptitude to solve the problem. Before planning the design, use centricity and try to determine who this product is meant for: a child, an elderly person, or an artist. The design will be based on the needs of the user of the product. Do not focus on aesthetics! Your aim is to prioritize the functionality or mechanism of the product, for example, a futuristic-looking chair with refined hinges, joints, or straps that exhibit that it can actually be folded. Additionally, you can provide annotations by creating short and comprehensive tables mentioning the features that the user cannot grasp easily or are not explicitly portrayed in the drawing alone. These may include a non-slip rubber grip or collapsible telescopic legs in this case.

Resort to Best Books

Refer to the best books for UCEED Part B sketching to gain expertise in shading, textures, projections, perspective, human figures, architectural sketching, and freehand techniques and solve mock tests or sample papers. These include “Design Drawing by Francis D.K. Ching”, “UCEED Part B Study Guide”, “Cracking CEED & UCEED by Ashok Goel & Arjun Kamal”, “Perspective Drawing Handbook by Joseph D'Amelio”, “Basic Rendering by Robert W. Gill”, and “UCEED Previous Year Papers Book by CreativEdge”, etc. among others.
